Clara Bog Visitor Centre interprets one of North Western Europe’s best preserved raised bogs; Clara Bog. The 460 hectare nature reserve is protected as a National Nature Reserve, a European Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and an International RAMSAR wetland.

The Visitor Centre houses an interactive multimedia exhibition and provides the platform for visiting groups to discover the relevance of raised bogs to our understanding of history, a unique biodiversity and vital ecosystem services. A range of educational activities that reflect strands in the SESE curriculum form part of the tour. These include children working as mini scientists conducting tests that help them understand the vital relationship between bogs and water or they may become bog detectives solving clues to uncover many interesting facts about Clara Bog.

Activities are followed by a nature walk on the bog where the children connect with their natural surroundings using their observational and listening skills. Here the bog becomes the outdoor classroom where the day’s learning is reinforced in a scenic, fun and naturally interactive environment.
