Lero brings together leading software teams from universities and institutes of technology in a co-ordinated centre of research excellence with a strong industry focus.

Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, brings together expert software teams from universities and institutes of technology across Ireland in a co-ordinated centre of research excellence with a strong industry focus. Lero’s research spans a wide range of subjects including software engineering, information systems and human-computer interaction in areas such as driverless cars, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, fintech, govtech, smart communities, agtech and healthtech.

Lero’s overall vision is to establish Ireland as a location synonymous with high-quality software research and development, to the extent that ‘Irish software’ can enter the lexicon in the same way as ‘German automotive’ or ‘Scandinavian design’.

Sixteen out of the top 20 global technology firms have strategic operations in Ireland. Ireland is recognised internationally as a leading location for companies in the software sector and Lero is a key pillar of that. Since it was founded in 2005, Lero has become one of the best-known, and most highly regarded, software research centres in the world

Research Areas

Lero has expertise across multiple disciplines from deep theoretical computer science and formal methods through to participatory design, human-computer interaction, ethics and values. Lero works collaboratively with industry partners to identify and solve specific problems.

Lero’s research programme comprises systems (what we build), methods (how we build) and context (for the world we want) in six key application domains:

  • Connected autonomous vehicles
  • Health, wellbeing & human
  • Performance
  • Smart communities/cities
  • GovTech
  • FinTech
  • AgriTech & food

Lero works with a wide range of industry sectors, state agencies, educational bodies and international collaborators to deliver on its twin goals of research excellence and social and economic relevance.

Lero collaborates with industry partners that share the common goals of creating new knowledge and pushing the boundaries of scientific research, while aiming to solve real-world problems and create commercial value and sustainable competitive advantage. This ethos has resulted in successful collaborations across a wide range of industry sectors, supported through well-defined processes for licensing, invention disclosures, patenting and spin-outs.

Lero is also the leader of the Blended Autonomous Vehicles (BAV) industry collaboration, a multi-SFI centre initiative and partner in the Enable and FinTech Fusion initiatives.
