Monday, 14th November 2011: Over 300 of Ireland’s leading scientific researchers will descend upon Athlone today and tomorrow for a high-level strategic think-in.

Science Foundation Ireland’s annual ‘Science Summit’, the theme of which this year is “Shaping the Future Now: New Horizons for Science and Society”, is the largest gathering of Ireland’s research talent in the scientific calendar.

The Science Summit 2011 will feature keynote addresses from the multiple award-winning US scientist, educator and biotech entrepreneur, Dr Corey Goodman, and a foremost pioneer of the internet, computer scientist and historian, Professor John Day.

Other highlights of the event include the ‘SFI Researcher of the Year’ and ‘Research Image of the Year’ awards, which will be announced this evening by Minister for Research and Innovation, Seán Sherlock T.D. In addition, senior representatives from industry will be participating in a series of panel discussions on life sciences, ICT and energy.

According to Director-General of Science Foundation Ireland, Dr Graham Love, “The role and influence of science in shaping our economy and our society is becoming increasingly evident. Government, business and the general public appreciate the value potential that research and innovation can deliver. It is important that we continue to support and strengthen our talent pool and that, in the process, Ireland further establishes itself as a scientific force on the international stage. The SFI Science Summit will enable Ireland’s most brilliant researchers and leading lights from the commercial sector to convene and reaffirm a collective commitment to generating research with consequences.”
