Eoin Casey at UCD is developing a low cost green technology for biofouling control. The technology is based on EnzBeads which are plastic spheres coated with enzyme material.   EnzBeads are introduced to process equipment as part of a cleaning cycle and act to mechanically disrupt biofouling, whilst simultaneously breaking down the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) of the biofilm. Critically, EnzBeads have a low density, facilitating gravitational recovery for reuse. The product is very cost effective and environmentally friendly.
