The image is of crystallized Carbamide. The colors seen in the image are real and obtained because of the crystal structures interaction with polarized light (the same technique used in modern 3D cinema glasses). Carbamide’s is a strong agent for dehybridization (separation) of double stranded DNA to individual strands as well as for denaturing proteins. Hence it is widely used as a regeneration scheme in several bio-chips and bio-sensors.
The SFI Research Image competition offers SFI-funded researchers the opportunity to submit digital images created during the course of their research.
