Joint Programming
Joint Programming (JP) is an ambitious new approach proposed by the European
Commission (EC) for making better use of Europe's limited public R&D funds through enhanced cooperation.
Joint Programming’s concept is the development and implementation of common strategic research agendas based on a common vision of how to address major societal challenges. It may involve strategic collaboration between existing national programmes or jointly planning and setting up entirely new ones. In both cases, it entails putting resources together, selecting or developing the most appropriate instrument(s), implementing, and collectively monitoring and reviewing progress. Joint Programming targets public research programmes first and foremost, which means public-public cooperation. Currently a number of themes for specific Joint Programming Initiatives (JPIs) are at various stages of implementation. For mor information please click here.
Science Foundation Ireland in conjunction with other national funding agencies (HRB, DAFF, EI, Marine Institute), Forfas and DETI are actively involved in the implementation of a number of JPIs where Ireland has particular strenghts;
- Neurodegenerative Diseases/Alzheimer'
- A healthy diet for a healthy life
- Urban Europe
- Antimicrobial resistance.
Of the JPIs being developed, the Neurodegenerative Diseases/Alzheimer's JPI is the most evolved, with the management structures and scientific advisory board (SAB) in place, who together, are generating a Strategic Research Agenda for the Initiative. The JPI’s for A healthy diet for a healthy life, Urban Europe and Antimicrobial resistance are still in a preparatory phase with much of the management structures and SABs still to be agreed on by the member states.
