ERA-net Scheme
The objective of the ERA-NET scheme is to develop and strengthen the coordination of national and regional research programmes through specific actions. Under the ERA-NET scheme, national and regional authorities identify research programmes they wish to coordinate or open up mutually. The participants in these actions are therefore programme 'owners' (typically ministries or regional authorities defining research programmes) or programme 'managers' (such as research councils or other research funding agencies managing research programmes).
ERA-Nets in Ireland
An overview of current and new ERA-Net activities is provided by NETWATCH, a service of the Joint Research Centre Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (JRC-IPTS) in collaboration with DG RTD Directorate B. There are 64 currently (June 2010) active ERA-Nets. Of these, 8 are ERA-Net+ consortia. Ireland participates at the present time in 23 ERA-Nets, on themes that range over climate and materials science, complexity science, agriculture and fisheries, photonics and other fields. The NanoSci-E+ ERA-Net+ is one in which SFI has been the lead Irish supporting partner. Through NETWATCH, full details can be obtained on these 23 ERA-Nets in which Irish researchers are currently active. There are also details that are catalogued by NETWATCH on 56 no longer active ERA-Nets. Through NETWATCH, there is also a strategic mapping study.
