Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is pleased to launch the SFI Spokes Programme 2015. This programme is a vehicle to enable the addition of new industrial and academic partners and projects to a SFI Research Centre, so allowing the Centre to expand and develop in line with new priorities and opportunities. This will ensure that the Research Centre retains its ability to do cutting edge research and its industrial relevance, and so enhance its sustainability. The Spokes programme also provides a vehicle to link together, in a meaningful and relevant way, different Research Centres. The Programme has been designed to deliver excellent basic, oriented research results and discoveries in targeted projects associated with SFI Research Centres and hence will deliver significant economic and societal impact during the lifetime of the programme.
Like the SFI Research Centres, the SFI Spokes programme will help link scientists and engineers in partnerships across academia and industry to address crucial research questions, foster the development of new and existing Ireland-based technology companies, attract industry that could make an important contribution to Ireland and its economy, and expand educational and career opportunities in Ireland in science and engineering.
The Spokes Programme 2015 will run as both a fixed and rolling call.
The Spokes Fixed Call is now closed.
The Spokes Rolling call will remain open, with no closing date (until further notice), to allow Research Centres to apply for funding at any time for new collaborative research projects with an industry partner(s).
To apply for a Spokes award under the rolling call mechanism, the industry partner (or partners) must make a minimum 50% cash contribution to the research programme.
The high industry cost-share component of the Spokes Rolling Call reflects the importance and urgency of the programme to industry and conveys the following advantage to this track:
• Timing of the application submission is determined by the applicants and not SFI
• Relatively quick turnaround (‘fast track’) of the submitted proposal
• Assessment of the proposal on its own merit and not in competition with other proposals
• Applications that are deemed fundable by scientific and impact assessment will be funded
• Call for Proposals (pdf)
• Frequently Asked Questions
• Spokes Proposal Programme Document for SESAME upload
• Spokes Budget Template for SESAME upload
• Centre Director CV Template
• Spoke Leader CV Template
• Collaborator CV Template
SFI reserves the right to make amendments to the documents if required. Please ensure that you are referring to the most recent version of the Call document and FAQs. Research Offices will be contacted in the event of any updates to the call document.
As detailed in the Spokes 2015 Programme Call for Proposals, all proposals are to be submitted via SESAME, SFI’s online grants and awards management system.
If accessing SESAME for the first time, researchers should contact their local Research Office to be set up on this system.
