SFI Research Professorship Programme
Programme Overview
Attracting outstanding research talent to Ireland is one of the principal ambitions of Science Foundation Ireland as a way of enhancing Ireland’s reputation abroad. As such, building and continually supporting mechanisms to realise such a target is of key importance to the Foundation. The SFI Research Professorship Programme is intended to support national strategic priorities by assisting research bodies in their recruitment of world-leading researchers for Professorial Chairs, or similar research leadership positions in targeted scientific areas within the Lifesciences, ICT & Energy sectors.
A candidate for a SFI Research Professorship Award will be an outstanding researcher in academia or industry, recognised as one of the world-leaders in their discipline, with a demonstrated capacity for strategic and dynamic directorship on an international stage. The ambitions of the appointed SFI Research Professor will be consistent with the strategic plans of both SFI and the host research body and will include fostering an innovative research environment, maximising the strategic impact of the host institution, and helping create new enterprise opportunities.
Because of the outstanding nature of the individuals this programme is intended to support, formal applications will be by invitation, following an expression of interest phase during which the Foundation will work closely with the research body. SFI will contribute funding to a successful host research body to underpin the research costs of the individual they intend to recruit. Funding of up to €5M will be provided to successful applicants for a five year programme of work which would also include a contribution towards the SFI Research Professor’s remuneration package for each year of the award.
