SFI Community Webinar 22 June 2011 - Changes to Research Frontiers Programme 2011
SFI hosted a webinar on Thursday 22nd of June from 16.00 – 16.30 to inform the SFI Community of the cancellation of future calls of the Research Frontiers and Principal Investigator programmes and their replacement with a single, consolidated programme to be launched by end of 2011. The SFI Research Frontiers Programme (RFP) supports research in framework and/or integrative fields of science, engineering and mathematics that impacts diverse fields and that contributes educational benefit that will advance national scientific progress. RFP awards may be up to €200,000 (total direct costs) and are of 2, 3 or 4 years duration.
The objectives of the Research Frontiers Programme are:
- To support innovative, cutting-edge and internationally competitive research in a broad range of disciplines in Science, Mathematics and Engineering.
- To establish a mechanism of looking forward to allow for changes in strategic areas in the future.
- To provide a broad base of support to underpin the strategic areas of Biotechnology, Information & Communications Technology, and Sustainable Energy & Energy-Efficient Technologies.
- To provide advanced education and training for young researchers in a wide variety of areas.

To provide support to early career investigators.
Eligibility
- Applicants should have at least three years of independent research experience beyond the Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent.
- Applicants must be a senior author (first, last or corresponding or in those fields where alphabetic order authorship is the norm, joint author) on at least 3 articles in major international peer-reviewed scientific journals. Only original research publications, and not review articles, are acceptable.
- Researchers currently funded by SFI, as either Principal Investigator (PI) or co-Principal Investigator (co-PI) under certain programmes, are not entitled to apply to the SFI Research Frontiers Programme prior to the last 18 months of their existing grant (date as per Letter of Offer). The specific programmes are: CSET, SRC, Mathematics Initiative, Charles Parsons, Research Professorship, PI, PICA, PIYRA, and RFP2010. SIRG09 award holders are only eligible to apply for an RFP award within the last 24 months of their existing grant and are therefore, not eligible for this call.
- Applicants who submit a proposal to RFP2011 will not be entitled to submit a concurrent application to PI 2011.

Applicants, or co-applicants, currently under review in the PI 2010 call are not eligible to submit an application to RFP2011. Applicants currently under review in the HRB/SFI TRA2010 Call are eligible to apply.

How to apply
As detailed in the SFI Research Frontiers Programme Call document, applications must be submitted electronically through the SFI Award Management System. In order to use the system all applicants must be setup by the Research Office within their institution.
