Third Level - Summer Research Placements

SFI Undergraduate Research Experience and Knowledge Award (UREKA) - Summer Research Placements in HEIs

The SFI UREKA (Undergraduate Research Experience & Knowledge Award) programme supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by SFI. The UREKA programme endeavours to expand student participation in all kinds of research - whether disciplinary or interdisciplinary - encompassing efforts by individual investigators, groups, centres and others. UREKA projects feature high quality interaction of students with faculty and/or other research mentors and access to appropriate facilities and professional development opportunities. Active research experience is considered one of the most effective ways to attract talented undergraduates and retain them in careers in science and engineering.

The aim of a UREKA Site is to provide outstanding undergraduate students (from Ireland and abroad) with the opportunity to conduct a challenging and meaningful research project in an excellent research environment, while at the same time providing them with a range of seminars and events aimed at stimulating their interest in science or engineering and equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in these areas. It is expected that UREKA Sites will become a powerful tool for attracting very highly motivated undergraduates who would provide a pool of high calibre potential PhD students.

Students - How to participate in UREKA

UREKA Sites are funded for up to three years and consist of a group of researchers and a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 16 undergraduate students who are assigned research projects. Students must apply directly to the UREKA site.
