This SFI Research Professor Recruitment Award replaces the previous SFI Research Professorship Programme.
Synopsis of the Programme In addition to funding the most promising research talent within Ireland in the areas underpinning Information & Communications Technology (ICT) and Biotechnology (BIO), Science Foundation Ireland’s Research Professorship Awards assist Irish Research Bodies attract outstanding scientists and engineers to their institutions from outside the state.
The SFI Research Professor Recruitment mechanism is intended for use by Research Bodies which are engaged in pro-active recruitment processes for Professorial Chairs (or similar research leadership positions) in targeted research areas of strategic importance. SFI will contribute funding of up to €500k per annum for up to two years to successful host Research Bodies to underpin research start-up costs of the researchers they intend to recruit. Successful Research Professorship proposals must be able to demonstrate the potential of the nominated researcher to advance the strategic research plan of the nominating research body, as well as the strategic priorities of SFI and Ireland.
The salary and employment contract for the Research Professor will be the responsibility of the host Institution and must be in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions and existing frameworks. SFI will cost share on the relocation package of successfully recruited Research Professors.
Applications nominating candidates for recruitment as part of the Research Professor Recruitment Programme should be submitted directly by the President/Provost/Vice-President of the nominating Research Body.
Calibre of Applicants A candidate wishing to apply for an SFI Research Professor Recruitment award should be an outstanding researcher with many, if not all, of the following qualities and distinctions:
- Currently a full professor at major international research university (or has an offer of such a position)
- Lead author of papers that have made a significant impact in their field (i.e. highly cited)
- Recipient of significant international awards and fellowships (e.g. the medals or fellowships from major International learned societies or research corporations)
- Plenary speaker at major international conferences
- Distinguished service record on national or international grant review boards
- Successful track record in securing independent funding from public and/or private sources.
