The Tánaiste also announced that Tyndall will host the Enterprise Ireland-funded Competence Centre for Applied Nanotechnology, an industry-led research initiative involving some of the world’s leading companies such as multinationals Intel, Seagate, Medtronic and Analog Devices and Irish companies Aerogen, Audit Diagnostics, Creganna and Proxy Biomedical which is also supported by IDA Ireland.

In a study published online in Genome Research (www.genome.org), scientists have made a crucial discovery of genes that have evolved in humans after branching off from other primates, opening new possibilities for understanding what makes us uniquely human. The research was supported by a Science Foundation Ireland President of Ireland Young Researcher Award (PIYRA). |

| Cork- Wednesday 9 July, 2009 - Tyndall National Institute, UCC, announced today the renewal of a five year contract worth over seven hundred and fifty thousand euro (€750K) with the European Space Agency (ESA), to provide advanced microelectronic technical support to its European Space Research and Technology Centre in the Netherlands, a test centre and hub for European space activities. ESA is at the forefront of space science and requires suppliers to meet the highest international technical standards. Tyndall, a leading European microelectronics research institute, will provide ESA with advanced services in the evaluation of integrated circuits and components and the investigation of new technologies for space through an ESA Microelectronics Technology Support Laboratory (MTSL) based at Tyndall.

Irelands newest pharmacutical devices company, Blue Box Sensors spun out of NUI Maynooth

| NUI Maynooth has today announced the latest spin out from the University. Based on patented technology by Prof John Lowry, head of Chemistry Dept, Blue Box Sensors Ltd will manufacture devices that can track levels of chemicals in the brain in real time over the course of weeks or even months. The sensors offer fresh insights into the workings of the brain and stand to improve preclinical research and drug discovery for a range of diseases including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and schizophrenia. Prof Lowry's original research was funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the commercialisation activity supported through Enterprise Ireland funding. |

| Monday, 25 May, 2009: Dr David Finn, Lecturer in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Science Foundation Ireland Principal Investigator and co-director of the Centre for Pain Research at NUI Galway, has received an award from Junior Chamber International (JCI) Ireland as one of Ireland’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons (TOYP) of the year aged 18-40. He was awarded winner of the Scientific Development category on the basis of academic and scientific achievements and community service/civic engagement in his research. Dr Finn will now represent Ireland in this category in the World JCI TOYP competition.

| An international collaboration between Trinity College Dublin (TCD) scientists and researchers in Scotland and Japan has developed a new animal model that reproduces a major genetic cause of human eczema. The TCD team was led by Professor Padraic Fallon, Science Foundation Ireland Stokes Professor of Translational Immunology at TCD’s Institute of Molecular Medicine and School of Medicine. This new discovery which has the potential of assisting the development of new therapies in the treatment of the disease has just been published online
