Sustainable Energy and Energy-Efficient Technologies
When it was established in 2000, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) was charged with investing in the two areas of research that were at the time considered to be of the highest strategic importance for Ireland – Biotechnology and Information and Communications Technologies (ICT).
In May 2008, in recognition of the challenges and opportunities presented by the related issues of energy security and climate change, a third pillar was added to SFI’s remit – sustainable energy and energy-efficient technologies. This addition presents the organisation with the responsibility and the opportunity of making a significant contribution to the challenge of sustainable development.

Charles Parsons Energy Research Awards
The Charles Parsons Energy Research Awards were established by the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, Mr Noel Dempsey, TD, in October 2006. The objective of the awards is to stimulate and develop energy research in Ireland by providing funding for research groups to undertake energy research particularly in priority areas. A specific aim is to increase significantly overall research capacity and in particular attract more engineers into energy research.
In May 2008, Science Foundation Ireland assumed administrative responsibility for the Charles Parsons Awards. Click here to view further information on the Charles Parsons Energy Research Awards.
