Dr. Marion Boland joined SFI as a Scientific Programme Manager in May 2009.
Dr. Boland holds a B.Sc. in Biotechnology from Dublin City University (DCU) and a Ph.D. from the Institute of Cancer Research/University of London, where her studies focused on unraveling the mechanism of bio-activation of a novel anti-cancer pro-drug. She was involved in a number of ‘targetted’ pro-drug initiatives (ADEPT) and was awarded the graduate student prize from Zeneca Pharmaceuticals for her work.
She completed a number of post-doctoral training positions at the University of Alberta, Trinity College Dublin (with Luke O’Neill) and the University of Cambridge before joining the Centre for Cancer research and Cell Biology at Queen’s University Belfast in 2001 as a lecturer in Molecular Oncology. Dr. Boland’s research interests focused on DNA damage signalling mediated by anti-cancer drugs and the outcome of subsequent transcriptional activation in breast cancer models. During her research career, she published in a number of international peer reviewed journals, spoke at conferences and was the recipient of a number of grants including one from Breast Cancer Campaign (UK). She supervised and mentored several graduate students in addition to teaching both under- and post-graduate courses.
Dr. Boland’s research interests include Cell Cycle Regulation, DNA damage signalling and transcriptional regulation, particularly in the context of Cancer and Inflammation. She has also some expertise in the field of natural products as therapeutic agents and furthermore, spent a year with Bell Pottinger Corporate and Financial where she worked as part of team managing the Financial Public Relations of companies in the Life Sciences and Biotechnology sector.
