Dr Lisa Higgins joined Science Foundation Ireland as Scientific Programme Manager in January 2007.
She completed an undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) at Trinity College Dublin. Following this, she carried out an industry-funded MPhil in biotechnology before carrying out her PhD (1999), in the area of mucosal immunology, in Bart’s and The London in the UK. The subject of her PhD research was the role of co-stimulatory molecules in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease. She was awarded an INSERM Postdoctoral Fellowship and carried out her postdoctoral work in France at the Centre d’Immunologie Marseille Luminy, in the area of functional genomics.
She returned to Ireland and was employed in industrial research for Elan Corporation, the indigenous Irish multinational pharmaceutical company, where she was involved in collaborative biotechnology joint ventures in the area of vaccine delivery and targeted drug delivery.
In 2003 she moved to research funding at the Irish Higher Education Authority (HEA) where she contributed to the implementation, monitoring and assessment of HEA funded research.
