Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act 1997, as amended by the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Act 2003 (FOI Act), effective from 21 April 1998, established three new statutory rights:
- a legal right for each person to access information held by public bodies;
- a legal right for each person to have official information held by a public body relating to him/herself amended where it is incomplete, incorrect or misleading;
- a legal right to obtain reasons for decisions affecting oneself taken by a public body.
Science Foundation Ireland became a prescribed body under the FOI legislation from 31 May 2006.
